Books Bring Adventure

Books Bring Adventure was a mid-1940s syndicated series of 15 minute episodes that dramatized children's books as selected by the women's charitable and volunteer organization, The Junior League. The books were approved by the American Library Association, the Children's Division of the Council of Books in War Time, and the Association of Children Editors. The programs were syndicated by the World Broadcasting Service and were broadcast by nearly 200 stations. Recordings were also made available for playing in schools. The program was "designed to attract the attention of the young and to project the elements of adventure and humor as well as education." In 1946, a Peabody Award Honorable Mention citation for "outstanding program for children" was made "to the Junior League of America for sponsoring the series, Books Bring Adventure , 26 adaptations of well-beloved books which were skillfully dramatized for young listeners." * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table."

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
