Crime Fighters was a police procedural that focused on some of the new technologies, especially in police labs, to capture criminals and solve crimes. The series was on Mutual from November 1949 to August 1956, which occasional gaps in its broadcast scheduling. The series was produced in New York and had many of the City’s veteran voices. The program dramatized the police methods to solve a true crime in their historical records. In many cases, some new or unusual technique was used to bring the perpetrator to justice. Unlike many other series, the program used landmarks, names, and dialogue that were common in the geography where the crime was committed. The program, it was claimed, had “an extensive research staff… to insure absolute authenticity for each broadcast. The main writer of the series was Paul Milton, a veteran of such series as March of Time, Mr. President, and Counterspy . The sole surviving episode of this series is from January 9, 1950, “A New England Detective.” The plot is about an ex-convict who stuck to his decision to reform his life and live honestly . The program includes Raymond Edward Johnson (the original host of Inner Sanctum ), Ian Martin, Abby Lewis, and other New York actors. * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table."
