Scrapbook Of Champions

Scrapbook of Champions was produced by WFUV, a station owned by Fordham University in the Bronx borough of New York City. The program was started in the communications department of the college. This particular recording was broadcast on June 11, 1954. It is about Lou Gehrig is narrated by Johnny Most, the play-by-play announcer of the Boston Celtics basketball team. It includes recitations a sentence or two from Gehrig’s famous farewell speech at Yankee Stadium when he knew he was dying from ALS. The other performers in this recording may be students. The announcer, Bill Watson, was a local New York City radio announcer. Very little is known about this series, and this may have been the only episode produced. * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table."

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
