Nick Carter is a fictional detective who first appeared in 1886 in dime store novels. Over the years, different authors, all taking the nom de plume Nicholas Carter, have penned stories featuring "America's greatest detective". This tale opens with Nick eavesdropping on two strangers in the next booth as he finishes his lunch. One of the men works at the telegraph office and is discussing an unusual wire he received. Nick's interest is aroused. (2 hr 8 min)

The first three chapters laid a fine foundation. The last three chapters cleaned up the case nicely. However, despite listening twice to each of the middle three chapters, I still have no clue as to what happened. I understand that LibriVox is a volunteer organization, but this sort of thing is quite without excuse!

As a non English speaker, but semi-fluent in English, I can handle many accents and dialects. But the Indian woman that is reading chapter 4-6(7), is just too much. I'm all for hearing different English spoken, but when I can't even understand what she's saying, then it's pointless

I appreciate her effort, but it took me several minutes to realize the reader was reading in English, and then I understood only a few of the words. I gave up listening when I saw she was reading several chapters of the story. If I skipped all those chapters I’d lose the thread of the story.

try as i might, I could not decifer what the woman reading chapters 4,5,& 6 was saying, so I could not follow the story. I tried to.pick it up in chapter 7, but too much was lost. it's too bad.

it was impossible to understand one of the readers. I had to skip the chapters in which she was the reader.
I enjoy hearing different English dialects but....
