The novel is set in a fishing village in Dorset during the mid 18th century. The story concerns a 15 year old orphan boy, John Trenchard, who becomes friends with an older man who turns out to be the leader of a gang of smugglers. One night John chances on the smugglers' store in the crypt beneath the church. He explores but hides behind a coffin when he hears voices. He finds a locket which contains a parchment, in the coffin belonging to Colonel Mohune. Unfortunately after the visitors leave, he finds himself trapped inside, and is only rescued two days later when two of the smugglers, Ratsey, the sexton and Elzevir Block, the innkeeper of the Why Not?, the local pub, investigate his disappearance. His aunt insists he leaves her house and Elzevir Block takes him in to live at the pub. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonfleet) (7 hr 58 min)

Excellent story and readers with exception of the last reader. Unfortunate choice coming from a strong, pleasantly manly reader at the crescendo of the whole story to using a soft, little girlish, "sticky" voice for the last two powerful chapters. I could hardly listen to the ending. She was not a bad reader, just far more suited to a femine story. The contrast was so severe it left me very jarred and disappointed. If not for the last reader, I would have given it a 5 star review.

Still a wonderful story with some great characters. The readings added drama to the text. I cried once again when John Trenchard was saved on Moonfleet beach. Loved it!

A classic adventure story very well read.

"Moonfleet" (1898) begins as a mystery and an adventure story, a tale of smuggling set among the cliffs, caves, and downs of Dorset. What will be the outcome of the conflict between smugglers and revenue men? How can the hero, John Trenchard, discover the secret of Colonel John Mohune's treasure? As the book progresses these two interwoven themes resolve themselves into a third and richer one, with the friendship and suffering of both John Trenchard and the craggy, taciturn Elzevir Block. Falkner's feeling for history and for the landscape of his Dorset setting combine with his gift for storytelling to turn Moonfleet into a historical romance of moving intensity. Many thanks to the readers of the book, especially Graham Redman and Simon Evers, for their respectable performance. An adventure well worth listening to.

Rollicking adventure story

A classic adventure for younger readers and old - peril, curses, smugglers, ship wrecks. Some narrators flow better than others, but the group work well together and add a nice layer of variety to the story.
