Tips to Reader

(4 Sterne)

Christine, You picked a good tale and have, to my ear, a very pleasant voice in timbre, inflection, modulation, etc. Perhaps it's my age, but you read just a tad to quickly at times, but not that often. I'm taking the time to write this because I think you are a very good reader. Do check pronunciation on words you are not sure of such as anathema and suave. Because you read so well, one doesn't expect mispronunciations. Again, I'm writing this only because you make listening to a good story very rewarding. There are plenty of readers who destroy potentially good recordings with terrible voices as well as poor pronunciation. Looking foward to hearing more of your readings.

I have listened to this book 2x

... and enjoyed it both times. Mr Grell has been murdered and Inspector Foyle is on the case. Upon arriving at the scene of the crime, Foyle makes a shocking discovery. His attempts to interview the different suspects in the case are thwarted by the dead man's fiance, her fiance's friend and competitor in affection, and the Princess Petrovska. It seems like everyone is trying to cover up the tracks of the guilty party. Foyle's got his hands full... The reader is excellent, I enjoyed her reading immensely.

Good Mystery

(4 Sterne)

This is a very good mystery. I did not figure it out nor should I say guess the truth until just before the end of the story. This mystery is filled with abundant detail of the officers trying to find the truth. The investigations seem to be led in one direction and then another, but it is nicely culminated with a recap at the end. In my opinion this is worth the time to listen. Ms. Blachford reads well, but sometimes rather fast.

Interesting characters

(3,5 Sterne)

It was easy to listen to the book. The reader did read quickly, but it detracts little from the work itself. I felt like the alliteration was used quite a bit, almost to excess. Characters were slowly built, and by the end, the reader thinks he knows the characters but does not. Good book for road trips or before bed.

(4 Sterne)

This was a good mystery with lots of twist, turns and surprises. My one negative is the reader. Although very articulate with a pleasant voice, her speed is too fast and too consistent. There was almost no pauses, inflections or change in pitch. I don’t expect volunteers to create a voice for each character, but they can put some variety in presentation. This resulted in having to, in some situations, play back and listen to catch the import of what was being said, and who was speaking. It was read more like a monologue than a complex novel.

Abandoned due to reader

(2 Sterne)

The reader has a clear voice, but due to the complete disregard for punctuation, one has to concentrate too hard to enjoy the story. Without a pause after a comma or full stop, it just becomes one incredibly long sentence, instead of a book. What a pity as she has enormous potential. I also had to slow it down a lot, as she reads too fast. Therefore, I will never know if the book was good or not.

Too fast!

(2 Sterne)

I can't tell if it's a good book or not- the volunteer lady reads too fast. I was interested in the plot, but had to stop listening because I could not stand the lack of pauses in punctuation and the lack of inflection in her voice! What a pity because otherwise she has a pleasant pronunciation and a lovely voice.

The explanation of the crime by the author at the end of the novel follows the pattern established and followed by most writers of the genre,. The plot and misdirection were well done. The reader was clear and easy to listen to throughout the work. Thanks to the reader and Librovox.
