The Dark House

An extremely wealthy but reclusive man has died, leaving an eccentric will which hints at great riches hidden somewhere in the house. Most of the people at the reading of the will did not know the deceased in person, but had received kindnesses from him, for instance by the payment of school and university fees. The principal beneficiary, a great-nephew, also did not know him. The only two people who really knew him were the old lawyer who dealt with his affairs, and an old Indian servant. Yet when the will had been read, and they all went to where the treasure--gold, jewels and bank-notes--were supposed to be hidden, nothing could be found. (4 hr 33 min)

Good mystery

(5 Sterne)

A very wealthy uncle passes away, leaving his treasure to his only surviving relatives, but splitting it up in a strange way. Stranger still is the request that his heir create a tomb in the house for himself. Can it get any stranger? How about two dead bodies in the dead man's room? Is that all? No, because now the rich man's treasure has disappeared! Who is responsible for the theft? What is the mystery surrounding the dark house? The story is well done right from the start, and is suspenseful straight through. Enjoy! Reading is good, if a wee bit monotone.

Perfect!

I love this narrator because of her particular calm pattern ...I listen to books as I go to sleep. & its nice not to have loud jumps in speech or fast narration that is hard to lull into....She is calming and even toned making sleep come easily.... and I just leave off at the last point I remember .... so I say...excellent job Lucy & Thank you for all your hard work!!! :-p

The Dark House

I really tried to listen to this story and was very frustrated because I could not understand what the reader was saying. I am not a great reader but I am trying to get my daughter and grand-daughter to read a book and I am hoping that we can re-do this one because I find it very intriguing. I know that it takes guts to read and I have nothing personal about this reader and appreciate her effort.

Lucy Burgoine is narrator. Need I say more. It might have been a good book but as stated in previous review, "the narrator is everything". Dear Mike Zane, you are too nice. Maybe you could re-narrate this book and I'll be the first to listen.

sounds good but....

It sounds good but I really do not enjoy that particular narrator. Narration of these books is everything and you are right about the monotone. I can barely get through her narration on a lot of these Librivox books.

I really want to hear this book, but there is no other narrator and I can't handle the monotone of this narrator...I hope someday I can hear this most interestinf book!!

Good little story, though it ends a bit suddenly.

It's a good story.
