The Figure in the Carpet

Gelesen von Nicholas Clifford (1930-2019)

(3,929 Sterne; 35 Bewertungen)

The story ostensibly concerns a young literary critics who greatly admires the writer Hugh Vereker. A meeting with Vereker, however, shows him that he – and all other critics – have in fact missed the great point of Vereker's work, and the critic (and his editor) thereupon devote themselves to trying to unravel the mystery. James's story, however, almost certainly has an autobiographical side to it, perhaps itself criticizing those critics who couldn't see, or wouldn't see, the figures lost in the carpet of his own writing. Dont think this author wrote for the regular person. The use of large words, when simple words would have made more sense. It just seems a bit snobish of most writers in this age. Gave him a try since I love this reader.

Professor Clifford

You are greatly missed. The voice of Henry James and a man of intelligentsia and grace.

Nicholas Clifford is excellent again.

(5 Sterne)

A wonderful story, both subtle and sharp and perfectly paced. It is read brilliantly by Nicholas Clifford. James couldn't have wished for a better reader. The delivery is calm and considered, and the timbre of Clifford's softly accented American voice seems somehow to exude both compassion and intelligence. As another reviewer has already commented, it is as though the author were quietly reading his own work directly into your ear.

Clever story, solid reading

(4 Sterne)

This story/novella is bizarrely funny. It gets a good, clear, straightforward reading from a single reader (male and American-sounding). I think the understated quality of the reading works well for the story. Okay sound quality except for a very slight microphone hiss (or fan hum?) throughout.

Another henry james nicholas clifford gem

Great story read by read by one of the best readers. I should say, THE best reader for james' work.
