Illegitimacy, false identity, and bankruptcy are the major elements of Sir Walter Scott's 1816 novel, The Antiquary. Set in the period of the French Revolution, the novel's hero, Lovel, struggles to gain repute and the hand of his beloved despite his uncertain parentage. During these pursuits, he befriends the title's antiquary, Johnathan Oldbuck, who finds Lovel a captive audience to his scholarly studies and a tragic likeness to his own disappointments in love. Readers will discover whether Lovel's acts of bravery and courage ultimately earn him the birth and fortunes of a nobleman. (Summary by S. Kovalchik) (19 hr 41 min)

READER'S DIGEST WOULD HELP

(3,5 Sterne)

Scott is always wordy, but this must be his zenith. The entire first volume could be shortened by 90% without losing any storyline. The second volume is much better, but this certainly not one of his best efforts. I must praise Skoval higjhly for her lucid and well-paced reading. Even higher praise is due for her conservative use of the Scottish accent. She uses it so that we are definitely aware of the speaker's nationaliy and station, but she refuses to overdo it as many readers have done in other works by Scott. Thank you.

Like most listeners and readers, I agree that the plot on the novel is slow. The reader, however, did a good job, even with the Scottish accents.

(5 Sterne)

Scott delivers, as usual, it just takes 3-5 chapters to get into it.

I tried...I was going mad.
