Bank manager John Hornbury is missing, as are securities and jewels from the bank’s vault. Gabriel Chestermarke and his nephew Joseph have unaccountably refused to call in the police to investigate the theft from their bank. When Betty Fosdyke shows up to visit her Uncle John, she finds it past belief that he would simply disappear – let alone that he would commit larceny. Unable to simply sit by and wait while a detective from Scotland Yard investigates, Betty elicits the help of the chief clerk at Chestermarke’s bank and launches into the middle of the mystery.(Summary by MaryAnn) (7 hr 20 min)

too good

(5 Sterne)

Very nicely written mystery with a minimum of melodrama and well rounded characters. Best of all, the bad guys get their just desserts and the good guys get their rewards. Great reader.

Good story, very well read

Interesting and very well read.

Excellent story

(5 Sterne)

Another excellent story added to the public domain. John Hornbury is missing, along with some jewels and bank securities that he was responsible for. His niece is worried, and launches an investigation into his disappearance, but the bank owners want nothing to do with it, other than to determine how much was stolen. Why won't they help in the search for Mr Hornbury? What are they hiding? Reader is excellent, easy to follow and understand. This book also kept me listening till the end. Enjoy!

Excellent reading..kept story line from becoming tedious. "Who dunit" wasn't the mystery, how it was done was the story. Certainly not a taxing mystery but enough to keep you listening. Yet another, and new to me, fine reader. Thanks to author, reader and LibriVox...and all in comfort of my own home! (A five star reader.)

Great mystery, fabulous reader

J.S. Fletcher is a master of weaving complicated and intriguing stories. This was one of them. The reader is one of my favorites, too. Character development leaves you knowing which are good or evil but still guessing how they interconnect.

a good, if slightly grim, mystery

(4 Sterne)

A pretty well crafted story. Don't expect much in the way of character development or scene-setting, but it does what it says on the tin. Many thanks to the reader, who did a great job.

THE BEST OF FLETCHER

(5 Sterne)

One could not ask for a more well-crafted mystery than this. The reader only increased the enjoyment. Thanks. As one comment has already started: the good guys won and the bad guys paid the price.

Typically J S Fletcher Mystery

(2 Sterne)

Good Mystery, typical of Joseph Smith Fletcher. This Volunteer has such a pretty voice, however, her reading has, Hyper-diction-affliction , without the flow that one enjoys from most Solo Projects. I found it annoying....sorry.....
