As an aristocratic woman living in 19th century France, she chose her first novel to be, above all, a realistic work. Indiana is trapped since the age of 16 in a loveless marriage with a rich, much older, man. Her only real friend is her cousin, sir Ralph, who, sometimes, just does things which are- logically- the best for her but- mentally- the worst he could do. She tries to find means of escape. But would she be able to recreate her own reality? Can a woman find true love while trying to maintain her identity and independence in a man's world?"

Terrible ending. No, I will never again read or listen to another book by George Sands. Even though it was the first book, it shows her mode of thinking. Yes, the reading was excellent. Unfortunately, I cannot give stars for this work, because it would seem as if they are for the story as well.
Complex and Dark

Indiana is a fascinating look into a young woman during a transitioning France (Bourbon to the House of the Orleans) and a protest against the social mores that held a woman in complete submission and control under her husband. The in-depth character development of Indiana, her husband, her cousin and the man she loves, is simply amazing. The story is engrossing with many defining events in Indiana's life. Excellent narration completes this compelling story. Highly recommend!

Now living in Paris, I was excited to read this celebrated French author's first novel. I didn't believe the characters. The story just failed for me. I misquote: "I can't imagine much worse than living in a furnished apartment in Paris." ok

This was a good book with some interesting points of view. It is worth a listen . The reader was superb.

Excellent story……really and truly. The narrator could not have done more to bring this story to life.
