Maria Edgeworth was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. She held advanced views, for a woman of her time, on estate management, politics and education.

"It was in 1830–when already past sixty years of age–that Miss Edgeworth set to work upon the last, and what, at the time it was written, was possibly the most successful of all her novels–namely, Helen. Any reader who will take it down from its shelf, and glance over it, will quickly perceive that it is a novel of a very much more modern type than any other by the same hand. In reading it we are aware that the eighteenth century has at last dropped out of sight, and that we are well out upon the nineteenth, not indeed as yet 'Victorian', but in a sort of midway region, on the road to that superior epoch." As a teenager who is severely displeased with current age teen/YA books, LibriVox has blessed me with audiobooks like this. I LOVED Helen, and the voice reading this book is extremely talented and pleasing to listen to. This book is full of good advice that is still applicable today. It is great for anyone who is a Jane Austen fan, and looking for more historical books to enjoy. I can not speak enough about my love for this book! Many thanks to LibriVox and their volunteers for making this available to me!

I love Maria Edgeworth's works and this is a good novel, though not my favorite of hers. several of the readers were excellent but some were difficult to listen to. Still, I appreciate their effort in helping to bring these books to an auditory platform where they otherwise wouldn't exist.

Almost all narration was done well. Only 1 guy read just 1 chapter obviously for reading practice. All the others were good, no funny voices or hard to understand accents

shame that it was difficult to understand the final reader.. all other readers, amazing.. loved this story.. couldn't stop listening!

Well read by most of the readers. Long age complicated story. Well worth the listen. Edgeworth was quite an accomplished writer!

I liked the story even though at some points it became tiresome when some characters behaved almost too stupid to be believed. I think it would come out better if more consideration would be given when assigning or awarding chapters to be read.
