The Bishop's Secret

Bishop Pendle is the Church of England bishop in a small fictitious English cathedral town. Several years into his work, he receives a visit from a disreputable-looking visitor. The bishop is much upset. What transpired between them that has so upset the good churchman? And then there is the murder. Fergus Hume was one of the most prolific and most popular of 19th century novelists. "Mr. Hume won a reputation second to none for plot of the stirring, ingenious, misleading, and finally surprising kind, and for working out his plot in vigorous and picturesque English. In "The Bishop's Secret," while there is no falling off in plot and style, there is a welcome and marvelous broadening out as to the cast of characters, representing an unusually wide range of typical men and women. These are not laboriously described by the author, but are made to reveal themselves in action and speech in a way that has, for the reader, all the charm of personal intercourse with living people...."

what is the secret the Bishop is hiding

(4 Sterne)

A very good mystery and well read by David Wales. Summary tells the story. Well worth lending a ear to this one. Hume is.a very good writter of mysteries and keeps you in wonder until last chapter. Thanks to David Wales a very good & and easy to listen to.

Wonderful story, great reading.

This book was so well written and the characters were so well developed that I don't think there could be any improvement in any areas. The story kept my interest throughout and never telegraphed the ending. The reader did a fabulous job! Highly recommended.

Very well read and great, unexpected plot twist at the end.

Another good one

This is the second of fergus humes books I have listened too and they are really well thought out keeping you guessing until the end. Give this a go. The narration is good to a point but when the narrator pronounces one of the words twice wrongly it does throw you. 'A drunken row' was pronounced row as in rowboat! And he does stumble a couple of times but still a good voice for it and well worth a listen

(4 Sterne)

Although this involves church people religion is thankfully not a theme in this book. Atheists can enjoy it as can believers. It has a lot of character development. The characters are interesting even without the murder. Nice twists. Things worked out well except for 1 character. If 2 people love each other & are good people they should be together rather than giving each other life long heartache. As usual, the reader is great.

Well told and well read!

Thanks to David for a great read. He made a long story most enjoyable! Just a very tiny quibble re the pronunciation of the word "row" - as in it used in this phrase: "pot-house row"; in this context, the word should be pronounced to rhyme with "cow" not "toe"!

A very good read.

This story is marvelous and very well constructed. When a character in a book causes me to loathe it so much I almost quit it makes it a very good book to me.

Wow

It's one of the best novels I've read in a long time. I love the way the plot twists and turns. Many memorable characters. The story holds your interest where you want to read on.
