Stevenson's introduction of the protagonist Lester (law clerk with New York firm Graham & Royce) finds him occupying a front row seat in the murder trial of Wall Street multi-millionaire Hiram Holladay. Scandalously, suspicion points very solidly on the banker's loving daughter, Frances. Lester proves himself a useful aide to the firm's senior partner, Mr. Royce, in his attempt to prove the lovely Frances innocent. - Summary by Cate Barratt (4 hr 38 min)

A Clever & Ageless Mystery

(5 Sterne)

This is another example of timeless storytelling, by a genuinely talented writer. Engaging characters tangled in believable circumstances, a few moments of romance and thoughtful suspense all coupled with a superior running narrative of good versus evil. Top it off with the LibriVox volunteer, Cate Barratt & this is another Winner.

This author is great. Even the best of stories lag a bit with too much detail. But this story does not lag at all! The reader is also excellent! Please record all this author has to offer. Huge thank you!

Excellent!

I enjoy Mr Stevensons tales, and Cate Barrattbread it with such life and poise that it enhanced it no end.

yearly reading schedule. I would think there could have been more the attorneys could have done to protect their client. interesting story line.

Story and reader are excellent.

All the facts are neatly tied together at the end in a most interesting fashion.

Good but flawed

If the daughter had committed the brutal murder her clothes would have been considerably stained with blood. yet no examination of the "dark red dress" was ever made. Very odd. This alone would have been an exonerating fact. And gloves she was wearing? Sad holes in otherwise interesting book.

A good listen

Cate Barratt is an excellent reader. The story seemed to keep my interest most of the time. I was surprised to hear the doctors using dementia as the diagnosis for so many ills. The ending left some questions for me. All in all, worth listening to.

Good mystery

The summary covers the plot. I will say the story is a wee bit predictable as to what the twist at the end is. However, the story is still enjoyable. Excellent reader, excellent recordings, thank you!
