The adventures of Horatio Hornblower are based on the novels by C. S. Forester, who crafted a compelling narrative that follows the rise of a young, unpromising midshipman to Admiral of the Fleet of Britain's Royal Navy during the Napoleonic era. The series has been admired by notable figures such as Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway, who praised Forester's work.

These 30-minute radio episodes first aired on July 7, 1952, and were produced by Harry Towers through his Towers of London syndicate. Although the BBC was not interested in the series, it found a home in the United States, where CBS originally broadcast the 52 episodes until July 17, 1953. The series was later rebroadcast by ABC in 1954 and the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1957.
