Pericles By William Shakespeare 27 November 2005 Drama On 3 – 8.00-9.40pm BBC RADIO 3 SHAKESPEARE RETOLD Pericles serves as an introduction to many of the great themes of Shakespeare’s final phase, notably the relationship between parents and children (and fathers and daughters in particular), the process of ageing and the getting of wisdom, the passage of time, and even the grand themes of self-knowledge, forgiveness, and redemption. It tells the tale of Pericles, Prince of Tyre, and the rise and fall in his fortunes over a 16-year odyssey. This production is a fresh take on the play as a world journey and a romantic adventure full of tyrants, incest, treason, murder, knights, teenagers, kings, pirates, brothels, sublime poetry, young love, a great hero and The Goddess Diana. The cast includes Tom Mannion as Pericles and poet Benjamin Zephaniah as Gower. The production also taps into contemporary global culture and music, setting out to make a virtue of the play’s unique structure by presenting it as a world odyssey, replacing its Eastern Mediterranean settings with global destinations and cultures. Join him as he travels across the treacherous oceans of North Africa, ancient Syria, Turkey, and Greece and is forever changed by the comically exotic and morally vague figures he meets. Love, betrayal, laughter, and adventure unfold in this engrossing, yet seldom produced, Shakespearean gem.
