(4.8 stars; 603 reviews)

Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen's first published novel, focuses on the lives and loves of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. The sensible Elinor and the sensitive Marianne both fall for men whose affections are otherwise engaged. The novel includes a wonderful cast of colorful supporting characters, as well as Austen's trademark dry wit and ironic narration. (Summary by Elizabeth Klett) (10 hr 52 min)

Sense and Sensibility

(5 stars)

I never tire of listening to Ms. Klett as she grasps and relays the tone, virtue and nature of the characters of this book and others. Her choice of Librivox books and her gift of reading are both timeless and fulfilling.

The cult of sensibility examined

(4 stars)

Beautifully read, Austen's first novel is less even in its appeal than her later work but nonetheless an interesting and often sparkling tale. Austen's tone in the early part is more severe and a bit off-putting, so I enjoyed the novel more as it progressed and developed the nuance familiar in her subsequent writing. Overall, however, it's a fascinating insight into how the cult of sensibility was gripping society at the time.

Truly enjoyable rendition

(5 stars)

Even though I had seen every film version of this book, I had not actually read it. When I found this site and this title, I decided to listen to the book instead of reading it. And I am so happy I did!! Jane Austen's actual wording and phrasing made me appreciate the story even more than I expected. Also, the narration by Elizabeth Klett was spot on, and each character was easily distinguishable. I think it enhanced my enjoyment much more than if I had read it and tried to imagine the different voices in my head.

Great Reader & Great Novel

(5 stars)

Although the story starts out at a rather slow pace it becomes addictive after the first few chapters. I found myself truly struggling to keep going at first, but I am so happy I pushed forward because it only got drastically better. So stick with it!! The reader, Elizabeth Klett, is amazing and reads the novel with both emotion and eloquence. I have listened to her read a few books now and love how she reads. Definitely look her up! Overall, if you have enjoyed other Jane Austen novels, you will certainly enjoy Sense and Sensibility.

reading Nancy Drew

I'm pleased you enjoyed Elizabeth's readings - it's always nice to know someone is enjoying it LiriVox records books which are Public Domain in the USA - which tends to be those published before 1923. And readers tend to pick books they enjoy reading. Elizabeth is obviously a Jane Austen fan As Nancy Drew started in 1930 we wouldn't be able to record it , with the present laws it will not be out of copyright for a number of years Anne

Wonderful book, outstanding reader!

Elizabeth Klett is such a talented reader! I became hooked on Austen and the Brontë sisters while making long car trips. When I stumbled upon Ms. Klett as a reader, I started choosing my next LibriVox book from the among those read by Ms. Klett. This book by Austen is suspenseful and engaging, especially as the book progresses. My local "Well-Read Mom" bookclub just finished reading it, and we enjoyed discussing the well-developed characters.

Brilliant and entertaining classic!

Jane Austen is as witty as ever! The characters are so realistic and relevant even to today's crowd. No matter what time you live in, human nature is the same at its core. Elizabeth Klett does such an excellent job narrating, as she does with every book, you can distinguish every character from each other.

Wow!

The reading was fantastic, and the book marvelous. I fell in love with the characters and story, and I cried with Maryanne when she suffered. I feel like I am most like Maryann, and felt her joys and suffering keenly. I will most assuredly and assiduously devour all that Jane Austen has put pen to. :)
