"If you will listen to this book, you will meet a cast of unforgettable characters, as different from one another as the sun and moon. But they have one thing in common - all of them hide many, many secrets. The plot of this book is full of twists which may leave you guessing until the end. Bridget's lively reading adds much to the joy of listening to this book."

Excellent

This was a really good story. I think the hidden hand could also mean the hidden hand of God as there was often divine intervention going on. Although not a religious person myself, I thought that the religious undertones were done very well. The story is riveting and I truly enjoyed it. I have listened to a few other narrations by Bridget and she does a nice job. Her voice is well suited to the character of Cap.

great fun!

This is a great read. If you like 1800s fiction, this is a must. Along the lines of a serial story or a dime novel but wonderfully, agonizingly long. A story with a high moral, which tends to turn people off, but such rollicking, fun characters! Fantastical, sad, funny - it takes you the whole way around. My only complaint is the reader's pronunciations get a bit off and she's sometimes rather toneless. Still worth it, though!

Absolutely excellent book. author is amazing in how they are able to captivate the reader. I love the sense of humor in the characters, especially Capitola. I would also recommend other books by this same author. also wish more books from this author would be recorded in here such as "Ishmael" and "Self Raised" and if they get recorded I want the same reader to do them.

Mixed emotions with this book

I liked it a lot but it was hard to listen to, so tragic are many of the occurences in the book. A nurse is kidnapped and delivers a set of twins in secret. She is begged by the mother to take one of the twins with her and 'save her.' Years later, the nurse on her deathbed tells her story to a local military man, hoping to find justice for the child she raised who is now without a friend in the world. The man determines to save the child and see to it that justice is done. Thus begins an up and down story where just as you think things will be okay, they take a tragic turn for the worse again. It was an emotional rollercoaster. Reading was very good.

Engaging and Fun

I really enjoyed this story! Crazy events happening in almost every chapter keep you at the edge of your seat 😄 Cap is one of my favorite characters of all the books I've read. She's so witty and brave and loveable :) I took off half a star for the racism, which although it is not worse than most literature set in the South and written during this time period, it is not a book I can recommend without a disclaimer. The narration is lovely. Even though Bridget mispronounced a few words, her voice is extremely pleasant to listen to, and I prefer by far her natural voice than some who do over-exaggerated character voices.
