One of my favorite books!

(5 stars)

This is my sister's favorite book of all time. I can't tell you how many times she's listened to it, over and over and over! Abigail is one of the best readers on Librivox (though the quality isn't as good on this one). Lysbeth is, to me, arguably Haggard's best work, along with The Brethren (also read by Abigail!) and Pearl Maiden. I love the two parts to the story with the, say, 20-year gap. It gives it such a well-rounded depth.

This was my first H. Rider Haggard book and I’m a fan. It’s a story well told that puts one through every emotion. Its a focus on the effects of the Spanish Inquisition on a Dutch town filled with decent, hardworking people who eventually must rise up against their brutal oppressors. It’s an adventure story, a love story and a story of gray cruelty and redemption. I couldn’t put it down!

Excellent book. I learnt quite a bit about Dutch history and their 80 year war against Spain. It kept me at edge of my seat to hear about the adventures of Lysbeth and her family. Thanks Abigail. Very well read!

These are excellent books revealing some of the history of the Netherlands from the Protestant viewpoint. It is honest the terrors of that time. I loved how the author had the characters lives intertwined with each other effecting the entire country with their actions. It kept my attention!! It was very skillfully read by the reader as well. Thank you!

This is hands down my favorite Haggard book. I love the era, the history, the culture and as always Haggard does a fabulous job with the characters and mixing adventure, tragedy love and triumph.

STUPENDOUS

Another Haggard masterpiece! Possibly his darkest novel, it is the more remarkable for the absence of his trademark fantasy action. Thanks to the reader for a truly great reading. Don't miss this one.

Fantastic book and a fantastic reading! Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good novel, great historical fiction, or anything to do with this period of history.

This story helps us understand what it would have been like to live during those times. Although many sad things transpired in it, it kept my interest to see it through until the end.
