To the Last Man

Read by Richard Kilmer

(4.4 stars; 286 reviews)

The story follows an ancient feud between two frontier families that is inflamed when one of the families takes up cattle rustling. The ranchers are led by Jean Isbel and, on the other side, Lee Jorth and his band of cattle rustlers. In the grip of a relentless code of loyalty to their own people, they fight the war of the Tonto Basin, desperately, doggedly, to the last man, neither side seeing the futility of it until it is too late. And in this volatile environment, young Jean finds himself hopelessly in love with a girl from whom he is separated by an impassable barrier. (Summary by Wikipedia) (11 hr 2 min)

Reviews

Richard Kilmer reading of To the Last Man

(0.5 stars)

Reading is exceedingly choppy, treating every few words as a separate phrase with no apparent concern for expressing the meaning and intent of the author or characters through sentences, paragraphs, etc. And the phrase reading falls into a singsong cadence, routinely rising at the end of one and then falling at the end of the next, again failing to convey meaning and intent. Further, there was almost no effort to vocally distinguish the many characters from one another. Overall, I found it almost unlistenable.

(5 stars)

Took me a few attempts, but once I fell in with the narrator's style, I was hooked. This is a good thriller set in the harsh early West, amoung the most rugged of men. One of which, finds himself in a mortal conflict with villainous rogues, who all revolve around the admiration of one beautiful woman.

another good Zane Grey title

(4.5 stars)

I always find this to be a good book by Grey, especially as it is based on a true story. In my opinion the lead character should be "Jean", not the French sounding pronunciation. Also true for the Texan father "Gaston" (not Gastone).

Good book not Zanes best but a good read.

(4 stars)

The ending left you wanting more. The narrator did a great job and does on every book he reads. The book itself was very good. it just ends with a lot of unanswered questions in my opinion.

a mess! I think I'll the have to listen one more time to understand what went on. I grew up in West Texas and remember whispering of these names, but mum was the word when kids we were around -- THANK GOODNESS!

Another Good One

(4.5 stars)

I would have liked a little more at the end but it was a good story. Mr. Kilmer did his usual good job. I find my books I want by searching for his name. He is an awesome reader.

ZG ALWAYS GIVES YOU YOUR MONEY'S WORTH

(5 stars)

A great telling of this blood feud. As usual, ZG doesn't let the reader relax until the final paragraph. Bravo Richard Kilmer.

Excellent story

(5 stars)

The story was suspenseful and rivoting. Though not the smoothest reader, after a few chapters you overlook it in favor of the great story.
