1950-1959 Radio News

(4.8 stars; 6 reviews)

News from the 1950's I usually share these via torrent but I don't think all these files are available on archive.org so here's a 1950's news file dump. Plus some talk shows and specials. Any typo or error is mine.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

CBS Could mHave Done Something Different On April 11th, 1951

(4 stars)

Since the end of the boxing match couldn't have been broadcast live due to President Truman's speech, and since high-quality audio tape equipment had been developed by that time, CBS Radio should have taped the rest of the fight from the start of Round 7 onward, and played it back once the speech was over. This way, everyone would have been happy.

Wonderful shows...hours of historical content

(5 stars)

These news shows are chock full of historical references, music, classic commercials, and factual tidbits. Wonderful to hear voices of Fred Friendly and Edward R Murrow along with other legends in news. I had never heard episodes of Hear It Now. I know I will listen to these again and again. Thank you so much for sharing these OTR gems.

Usage Inquiry

(5 stars)

Hi there! I'm hoping to get in touch directly with the poster to speak about releasing usage for a portion of this radio segment for a not-for-profit independent short film. Please advise if there is someone I can reach out to directly. Thank you so much! I just love this segment.

Just Like Being a Time Traveler

(5 stars)

Wow! These recordings are absolutely wonderful! Such a great picture of what the world was like shortly before I was born. Listening to the Betty Hutton interview (from 1950), at the end of the interview when Betty was asking the reporters questions, she was marveling over the big new thing that was television. She asked them if they thought that TV or radio would ever have a bad effect on newspapers. None of the reporters felt either would be detrimental to newspapers. One reporter said "how would one clip out their news stories from TV or radio?" He felt TV and radio would absolutely not have a detrimental effect on newspaper, "something that you can actually hold in your hand." Oh boy, oh boy. Little did they know how the future method of communication and information would so drastically change the world that they knew. Well - the female reporter answered that she would like one of those little boxes she heard about that people can have in their homes and it would print out the newspaper for them while they fix their morning coffee. !! (I personally never read of that invention being around in the 50s. Obviously it was an idea that was a little ahead of its time.) I also listened to the very brief announcement of the launch of Sputnik, which the reporter called "earth's very first artificial satellite." Wow. Sixty plus years later and now there is a space junk yard orbiting earth's outer atmosphere. These are really great recordings. There are gems in these recordings if you just take time to listen. You know, it makes you realize that today's newest technologies will be looked at like stone and chisel at some time in the future world, when later generations are listening/watching our recordings and wondering about us and our way of life today. But then again, with the constant advancements in medicine, science and plastic surgery, we all may be living, patched together with artificial limbs, Bio-Gel, spit and a prayer until we are 150 years old!!!! (Oh, no, I really hope not!) Thanks again for the great recordings.
