GREAT STORIES. A BIT OF A DIFFICULT LISTEN AT TIMES

(3.5 stars)

Somerset Maugham's writings are light and beautiful, capturing the cultural mores of the time. The reader, however, needs to be more aware that she is a second language speaker and she pronounces many words in the way of her native language. A whole section of the delicate romance unfolding in De Amicitia was lost, therefore, in trying to figure out what was said. When she is slow it is fine, but she loses awareness of the listener as she speeds up.
