Kraken

In Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s short poem, a vast sea creature lies asleep in the depths, far below the reach of ordinary human life. The poem imagines its hidden world through images of darkness, ancient waters, and strange marine growth.

Quiet and atmospheric, The Kraken builds its effect through vivid description rather than a developed plot. Its central image draws on the legendary sea monster, while the poem’s measured language gives the creature’s long slumber a sense of age and mystery.

This is a brief work of nineteenth-century poetry, suited to listeners drawn to mythic imagery and the uncanny. The audiobook offers multiple readings of the same poem, allowing its sound and mood to be heard in different voices.
