The Story Of Aunt Mary

(5 stars; 1 reviews)

Aunt Mary was a soap opera that follows a story line which appears to have been broadcast in 1945 and early 1946. The plot features a love triangle, and involves a young woman in a failing marriage who pays an extended visit to "friends" in Los Angeles in order to conceal a dark secret from her father and others back in Wakefield. Mary Lane owns a small farm on the outskirts of Wakefield, where she raises chickens and acts as a steadying influence on her live-in niece Peggy and hired hand Lefty Larkin, who has quite a secret of his own. We learn a lot about the farm and the daily routine of life there. A typical breakfast, for example, consists of hot coffee, fried eggs, and fresh-baked muffins right from the oven served with butter and strawberry preserves. An abundance of such details is one of the attributes which elevate Aunt Mary above the ordinary domestic daytime drama.

Beautiful gem :)

(5 stars)

Many thanks to the uploader of this beautiful GEM of a show. I had a funny feeling it was going to be good before I even listened to 1st episode. I don't watch "soaps" - never have nor want to, but this isn t a soap in it's modern sense, it's more of a continuing drama, and it is not corny at all! As a matter of fact, I can totally see a man actually enjoying this and becoming hooked. For starters, the 1st real episode (not the pilot) scene starts out with peals of thunder, the narrator gives a succinct, clear description of the scene: how the character Aunt Mary or whomever lights a candle in the kitchen after feeling her way about in the dark, the power had gone out because of the storm. Just the way HE narrates it, and the really great writing, just "getcha" and you're sucked in from the start. The writing stayed solid and even more interesting as the episodes go on. The audio is FANTastic, crystal clear (so far- not done hearing them all yet but boy do I love these shows!) I found a new favorite :) what a doll of a show. Oh- did I tell you about the plot? Man- this is risque for 1940s- but it isn't one of those "change agents for culture change" type of things, even the stuffiest old bags ('scuse me) won't be offended: single woman is in love with married man, he's married to lying shrew. For reasons of discretion and privacy (things that existed back then and not now) he's prevented from verbalizing to his mistress that his wife is claiming to be expecting, all he can tell her is that he can't see her for a while, but he is unable to tell her "why" (because he won't talk about his wife to her, because he's a nice guy - 1940's people would use discretion, which is sorely lacking today in all things)even though doing is risking losing his love-interest/mistress. Aunt Mary is one of the characters in this drama and the advice she gives to her niece(?i think its the niece) is really good. I felt as if I was sitting there hearing a loving intelligent and experienced and nice woman relation talking. I ended up feeling as if I were listening to real life. This is no weepy, Hammond organ interlude, corn-pone stuff, this is like a great movie, chopped up into bite size pieces, or "chapters" if you will, that you will cherish for ever. Does this mean I like the show? haha I do and you will too, no matter what your taste or preferences. The sound on this is perfect and NO muffling, narrow bandwidth issues, chipmunks or whistles that I could find SO far along. Thank you uploader!!! You are a champ. I am so glad I checked all the new uploads. Archive.org is so awesome I LOVE you guys. For all you people who are "disconnecting" or whatever you call it, that cancel your cable tv subscriptions- you don't need netflix, or hulu or amazon, all you need to use is Archive. The audio on this file is perfect, the writing is superb, the acting is perfect too. I find my netflix and amazon never get used because all my listening/watching time is used on this site. I should cancel those, and use the money to donate to this site instead, because I use it so much anyway it is well worth it. yes this is a real review lol I don't work for archive, or anything like that.
