H E. Bates The Fallow Land
H.E. Bates
The Fallow Land is a novel by H.E. Bates, adapted for radio by David H. Godfrey. The story is set in the English Midlands around the time of the First World War and follows the struggles of three generations of a farming family in the Nene Valley. It centers on Deborah Loveday, who marries Jess Mortimer, only to be left to manage the farm and raise their troubled sons, Benjamin and David. The novel, inspired by Bates's childhood memories, paints a vivid picture of a rural world that has long since disappeared.
Despite its initial acclaim, The Fallow Land has largely been forgotten and is unlikely to be in print today.
