Marcelle Maurette Anastasia

(4.6 stars; 5 reviews)

First broadcast on December 18, 1982, on BBC Radio 4 FM, this adaptation of Marcelle Maurette's play takes you to Berlin, 15 years after the Bolshevik revolution and the tragic massacre of the Imperial family at Ekaterinburg. A group of Russian exiles believes they have discovered a way to claim the fortune held in the name of the late Tsar Nicholas II.

To do so, they must prove that the Grand Duchess Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the Tsar, is still alive. This gripping tale is brought to life with a talented cast, including Wendy Hiller as the Empress Marie and Alan Wheatley as Prince Bounine, among others.

Remarkable

I was worried that this might have been the typical romanticising nonsense about the Romanovs. I needn’t have been concerned. It is a really high quality well written, superbly acted and subtle play. I highly recommend it.
