History of the Great American Fortunes

History of the Great American Fortunes, Volume III by Gustavus Myers is the concluding volume of Myers’s three-part examination of how enormous fortunes were accumulated in the United States. Volume III argues that America's great fortunes were not simply the result of individual entrepreneurship or talent, but were built within a system that enabled powerful financiers and industrialists to accumulate extraordinary wealth and influence. Myers portrays the growing concentration of capital as being supported by corruption and favorable legislation, while ordinary citizens and workers bore much of the economic cost. - Summary by Celine Major
