Selected Short Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Read by Laurie Anne Walden

(4.6 stars; 125 reviews)

Ranging in tone from humor to sentimentality, these stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald are set against a backdrop of jazz, flappers, and the changing mores of American society. In "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," wallflower Bernice is taken in hand by her more popular cousin, whose motives are not entirely altruistic. In "Benediction," a young woman visits her brother in seminary. A camel goes to a party in "The Camel's Back." "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is a poignant fantasy about a man who ages backward. Finally, tragedy befalls a young couple in "The Lees of Happiness." The stories in this collection are from the books Flappers and Philosophers and Tales of the Jazz Age. Most excellent!

(5 stars)

Laurie Anne Walden has a rich and wonderful quality in her voice and she is one of Libri's best readers, actually one of the best readers anywhere, and here she is reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's terrific stories of the jazz age. I think the last story is the most memorable.

voice nice but

I need to listen on a player that can increase the speed. She pauses at the end of a speaker's line for so long my attention drifts. Her voice is truly lovely though.

The character studies of Mr. Fitzgerald are some of my favorites in all of American Literature. This collection of his stories is very well read by a single reader.

Years ago, this was my first audiobook. I listened to so many of Laurie's other readings, too. She is easy to listen to. Then, I was on to reading everything Fitzgerald I could get my hands on. Then, took a trip to Paris to Shakespeare and Co. Then, on to read Zelda's works too. All due to my love of this first reading of an audiobook. I now Iisten to a book a week. I really appreciate Laurie taking the time to narrate for Librivox. It lit a spark for me.
