The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle is a picaresque novel by the Scottish author Tobias Smollett (1721 – 1771), first published in 1751, and revised and reissued in 1758. It is the story of the fortunes and misfortunes of the egotistical dandy Peregrine Pickle, and it provides a comic and caustic portrayal of 18th century European society. I don't know how I made it through this book. Yes, it takes place in bygone years but what Peregrine Pickle considers good jokes on his friends seem downright mean to me. Some parts made me laugh a lot. Other things he did were hard to fathom. I doubt I'll look for volume II.
