The Favor of Kings

"Never have bright romance and black scandal been more attached to the name of lovely woman," writes a quaint and susceptible chronicler, " than to that of fair Anne Boleyn." Certainly no girl ever flashed so meteor-like above the satellites of an English court, and no woman ever went to her doom under more awful accusations. Since fiction could not be half so amazing as the facts of Anne Boleyn's story, I have kept this novel of her fortunes true to those facts, and have gone, for their knowledge, not only to the histories written of this period, but in many cases to the sources of those histories. My endeavor has been to reveal the actual characters and the actual situations, and to use as much of the real incident and dialogue as possible." (Summary from the Foreword)) (11 hr 42 min)

Reviews

interesting book

(4 stars)

First few chapters were difficult to listen to. Reader barely paused between sentences so once I re-listened to them a few times it became possible to understand what was being read. The author painted a very realistic narrative of a historic period in time. Made me reflect on current events and parallel political tactics. Not exactly the same obviously but similar mindset. Now I want to study these events and learn more about this ruthless king and Anne's daughter. What became of her? 5 star book, 4 star reading. But they tried. Most were better than I could do.

Great book and author

(5 stars)

some readers go too fast, simply adjust the playback speed and follow this tale through to the bitter end. so strange to think only 300 years late came the prudish Victorians, whose influence is still felt, hard to imagine in the courts of these times.

The Favor Of Kings

(5 stars)

Phenomenally poignant study of this most infamous crime of Henry VII.
