The People of the Mist
H. Rider Haggard
Read by Richard Kilmer (1942 - 2022)
Penniless Leonard Outram attempts to redress the undeserved loss of his family estates and fiancee by seeking his fortune in Africa. In the course of his adventures he and his Zulu companion Otter save a young Portuguese woman, Juanna Rodd, together with her nursemaid Soa, from slavery. Leonard and Juanna are plainly attracted to each other, but prone to bickering, and their romance is impeded by the watchful and jealous Soa. The protagonists seek the legendary People of the Mist, said to possess a fabulous hoard of jewels. Finding them, they immediately become embroiled in the turbulent political affairs of the lost race, which is riven by a power-struggle between the monarch and the priesthood of its giant crocodile god. The heroic Leonard can do little more than react to events. The action climaxes in a hair-raising escape by toboggan (it was a flat stone) down a steep glacier. (Summary by Wikipedia) (16 hr 25 min)

Acceptable recording.

OK neutral reader. Could have been clearer, and easier to follow, if the intonations were read in the right places, with more understanding and empathy for the contents.
Loved it!!!

Lengthy Great Story. Fell in love with the main characters. Wishing to have friends like Otter. The reader Richard Kilmer is my favorite.
Non stop thrilling in romantic setting

Read very well, story a bit predictable but exciting and entertaining. Well worth "reading".

What a wonderful book. I will be reading more from H. Rider Haggerd
Good reader, book is rather morose

I've listened to many of H Ryder Haggart's stories and enjoyed all of them. This one, however, left me thinking that Mr. Haggart no longer felt optimistic regarding the human race. Yes, he did again show his disgust for the slave traders that did their awful work in Africa and skillfully saw their demise. The main characters were good people and they were not spared an overwhelming amount of pain, hardship and suffering. He wrote well and I listened to the entire story probably because the reader was so good.
AMAZING!!!!

Quite the Adventure
TwinkieToes
The rescue from slavery would have been a complete book in itself, but added to this, we get the adventurous travel to the city of the People of the Mist and all that occurs there. Definitely an adventure, with a final plot twist at the end. Very good!
Good story, but long

This is a really good story but it seems to go on forever! Too much of a good thing? The narration is good, precise but melodic - great for getting off to sleep which is one of my key uses of audio books!
