Operation Cochise: a carefully planned Western move to colonize a planet ahead of the Reds. Travis Fox had been an eager volunteer, but the morning he dragged himself half-conscious from the wrecked spaceship on the planet Topaz, he sensed the terror which would threaten the project. Travis never learned why the ship had crashed, nor why he and the other Apache agents had been shot into space without warning and under Redax control, a machine which had returned them to ancestral mentality. But the dangers on Topaz demanded free minds, for Travis soon realized that if the Reds already encamped beyond the mountains--a horde of barbaric Mongols completely dominated by their masters--discovered the secret of the eerie underground chamber in the towers hidden in a valley of mists, not only Topaz but Terra itself would be destroyed. Very much a book of its time!

(5 stars)

Though I certainly enjoyed listening to this book by Andre Norton, readers or listeners should be aware that there are views expressed which very much date the story to the late 50s and early 60s, namely the Cold War period. Having said that, I still found it interesting to read a story written from a very different perspective than the one we have in 2019. How will future readers judge stories written now, I wonder?

Great story

Good story, left me wanting more.

An interesting story concept well done

(4 stars)

Andre Norton usually gives us more adventure to science fiction than most and this is no exception. its a wonderful excercise in speculative fiction. I note a comment in a reviewer wondering how the cold War setting translates to 2019. Well its 2022 and it seems very relevant now! funny hoe history repeats itself when you think it's all in the past! Mark Nelson brings the tale to life as ever

Odd blend of characters

(4 stars)

Great concept but I didn't care much for the setting. It did have some interesting situations. Maybe I will try to listen again another time. Very well read.

Escapism at it’s best

As always, well narrated. Such a treat to listen to and enjoy again a story I read eons ago as a teen.
