In mid-1880s Brooklyn, New York, Cedric Errol lives with his Mother (never named, known only as Mrs Errol or "dearest") in genteel poverty after his Father Captain Errol dies. They receive a visit from Havisham, an English lawyer with a message from Cedric's grandfather, Lord Dorincourt. Cedric is now Lord Fauntleroy and heir to the Earldom and a vast estate. The Earl wants Cedric to live with him and learn to be an English aristocrat. He offers Mrs Errol a house and income but refuses to meet or have anything to do with her.
The crusty Earl is impressed by the appearance and intelligence of his young American grandson, and charmed by his innocent nature. He admits that Cedric, who has befriended and cared for the poor and needy on the Earl's estate, will be a better Earl than he was.
A pretender to Cedric's inheritance appears, but the claim is investigated and disproved with the assistance of Cedric's loyal American friends. The Earl is reconciled to his son's American widow.
The Earl had intended to teach his grandson how to be an aristocrat; however, Cedric inadvertently teaches his grand-father that an aristocrat should practice compassion and social justice towards persons who are dependent on him. The Earl becomes the kind and good man Cedric always innocently believed him to be. Cedric is reunited with his mother, who comes to live in the ancestral castle with them. The story was soooo warming and sweet . The reader spoke very clearly and she was a pleasure to listen to.

It’s a beautiful story. The reader is good but a bit of a shame that she doesn’t do an English accent for the earl and all the English characters. Other than that very very beautiful and great quality for headphones.

It is a lovely little fairy tale, I especially enjoyed the twist towards the end.

Story content has been said to "be more for the younger audiences". Perhaps not necessarily. The concept that if one chooses to lead a crusty & cantankerous life, then the misery one inflicts on others will in time come to rest on the perpetrator. But, as it is written, "a young child shall lead them". Unfortunately, only those who sufficiently come to the end of themselves will yield to being lead. The reader seems to have selected a reading style generally associated with that used for the enthusiastic entertainment of children. Whether or not the author's full intention ran along those lines I don't feel adequate to judge. But in using that style, some potential listeners may find themselves not inclined to select this listening opportunity; thereby missing a heart-warming moral lesson.

I LOVE this book! Honestly Frances Hodgson Burnett is such an amazing writer, and I really admire all her work. The style in which this book is written is extremely captivating and interesting and it has so many exciting twists and turns. It really makes you feel as if you were in that time and really watching the story! I recommend this book to anyone, I loved reading it when I was in second grade, and now I am a teenager and I still love it. I think I will love it for the rest of my life, it is really an amazing story.

The story itself is very nice and charming. I'd say this particular recording isn't for headphones/earphones as some bits are quite quite so you turn the volume up then after a few minutes the reader get very loud and it's quite jarring. It caught me a fair few times and I literally threw my headphones off. It's such a shame because the actual reading is good and animated it's just the volume issues otherwise I'd have given 5 stars. Anyway not for the easily startled. Although I finished the whole reading and it is a lovely reader.
Entertaining and Humorous of the "Aristocracy"

A very entertaining and humorous book. I loved the characters especially Mr. Hobbs and Dick. this is one of the best writings of Frances Hodgson Burnett. Kudos and thanks to the reader that made it so entertaining, Susan Umpleby.
